Community Vision Council okays Lighted Schoolhouse Pilot
The Strong families=successful children Community Vision Council has approved $100,000 to help fund the Lighted Schoolhouse pilot, an initiative that provides after-school programming and expands use of school buildings. The pilot began in February at Daniel E. Morgan Elementary School. A variety of agencies will provide a wide array of services including after-school programs so kids are safe and not home alone, a nutritious dinner weekly, behavioral health services for children, community forums, senior programming and more.
A fact we can't ignore
The number of Greater Clevelanders who have called 211/First Call For Help requesting food has grown steadily in the last five years both in Cleveland and in the suburbs. In fact, 28 percent of the callers who asked for their next meal were from the suburbs. You can help change that fact. Your donation to United Way is needed now more than ever. Please give securely online.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center has organized a grassroots campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault and crisis intervention services in our community during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The hope is that increased consciousness of this issue will help prevent sexual violence as well as assist survivors to feel comfortable telling their stories. A number of events have been planned.
Youth Social Indicator Report now available
Youth Development, the sixth volume of the Social Indicators series developed by The Center for Community Solutions and United Way of Greater Cleveland is now available. The book provides descriptive information about the health and social conditions of youths living in the 95 municipalities and neighborhoods of Cuyahoga County, as well as seven nearby counties. It serves as an excellent planning tool for health and human service professionals.

New Youth Pages in the works
United Way's 211/First Call For Help will again publish the Youth Pages, a directory of health and human service resources for teens that covers topics such as health, student rights, drug abuse and much more. This is the third edition of the popular book funded by the Cuyahoga Department of Health and the Cuyahoga County Commissioners and distributed through the school districts. And because every kid needs a book like this, the number printed will increase from 65,000 to 125,000 in 2005. The second edition of the Youth Pages is available online.
Mark your calendars!
Check out all the United Way activities begging for your participation. Mark your calendar now so you don't miss any.
Save on your printing costs and help United Way
Switch from higher cost name-brand laser printer toner cartridges to MCPc brand and you will cut your expenses. And for every MCPc cartridge you buy, four percent of its purchase price will be contributed to United Way in your company's name.
Designate Community-Wide Needs to provide immediate and long-term solutions
By designating Community-Wide Needs with your pledge, you authorize our trained volunteers to decide how your donations, and those of countless others, can target the greatest needs of our community. It might be to provide meals to homebound seniors, train better daycare providers to provide the best possible educational preparation for children or any of the 200 programs or initiatives of the Community Vision Council. Here is how to pledge confidentially online.

We publish What Matters to keep you informed about events, activities and developments affecting United Way and the Greater Cleveland community.
