Thomas W. Adler to Receive Community Leadership Award
To be presented at Federation Board of Trustees meeting on June 30, 2004

CLEVELAND - Thomas W. Adler is the recipient of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland's 2004 Gries Family Award for Community Leadership for his leadership in the Jewish community, in civic affairs and in his commitment to economic development in Greater Cleveland.

The award, which recognizes individuals who exemplify exceptional leadership in both the Jewish and general communities, will be presented June 30, 2004, at the Federation Board of Trustees Meeting.

"Tom epitomizes the qualities which the Gries Award was created to recognize," said Federation Board Chair Tim Wuliger. "He has strengthened enormously Cleveland's general community even while leading its Jewish community in so many arenas. We all benefit from Tom's diligence in fulfilling the obligation of every Jew to improve the world."

Adler's civic endeavors span decades of commitment to economic development and philanthropic causes in Greater Cleveland. He is chairman of the Downtown Cleveland Partnership and a trustee of United Way Services, where he co-chairs the Learning and Earning Investment Committee. He is a co-chair of the $27.4 million capital campaign for the Idea Center at Playhouse Square, a partnership between Playhouse Square Foundation and ideastream.

"The Cleveland Jewish community has always been deeply involved in meeting the needs of Greater Cleveland, as well as those of the Jewish community," Adler said, noting that the Federation was one of the founding organizations of United Way Services in 1913. "Our American Jewish heritage makes us passionate about contributing to the success of both the Jewish and general communities and enhancing the quality of life for all people."

Adler is serving his third term on the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland's Board of Trustees and chairs the Federation's Endowment Fund Committee. He is a past chair of Federation's Human Resources Development Committee and Philanthropic Planning Committee, in addition to serving in numerous other capacities. Adler is also a trustee and officer of the American Jewish Committee and is chair of The Thomas and Joann Adler Family Foundation of the Jewish Community Federation.

A 1978 graduate of Leadership Cleveland, Adler serves as the vice chair of its alumni board. He is a member of the Advisory Board of Cleveland Bridge Builders and a member of the Visiting Committee at Cleveland State University's Levin School of Urban Affairs. He is a past director of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association and currently serves on the Greater Cleveland Partnership's Physical Development Committee. Adler also serves on the boards of Playhouse Square Foundation, Red Cross, Citizens League, and the National Conference for Community and Justice, in addition to many other community activities.

The award was created by community leader Robert D. Gries and his family in 1993 to promote individual involvement in both the Jewish and general communities. The Gries Award Committee, chaired by Elaine Rocker, strives to enhance communication and build relationships between the two communities.

"I thank the Gries Family for honoring me with this award and for encouraging people - with this award and by the example they set through their own leadership - to continue to be involved in the community," Adler said.

A resident of Shaker Heights, Adler and his wife of 42 years, Joann, have three adult children: Peggy, Sally, and Bill (Sheryl). With the Gries Family Award, Adler receives a cash prize to be designated to a charitable cause of his choice.
