United Way Surpasses Goal, Raises $43.8 Million
Enables Agency to Make Significant Social Capital Investment in Community

      March 2, 2007 (Cleveland, Ohio)
The 2006 United Way of Greater Cleveland Campaign reached its goal, and went further, raising $43,835,030, announced Campaign Co-Chairs Robert J. King, Jr., Financial Stocks, Inc. Managing Director, and Robert H. Rawson, Jr., Jones Day Cleveland Partner-In-Charge, at United Way's Annual Meeting March 2 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Nearly 1,200 people attended the meeting to celebrate United Way's efforts on behalf of the community.

"The fundraising success of United Way this year is the result of the hard work of outstanding volunteers who served on the United Way Campaign Cabinet," said Henry L. Meyer III, United Way of Greater Cleveland Chairman of the Board and KeyCorp Chairman and CEO during his report to the community. Meyer added that the success of the campaign demonstrates the generosity of Greater Clevelanders and the important role United Way has in making a significant social and human capital investment in our community.

"We are impressed with the generosity and caring of the community," said Rawson, as he reflected on his year as co-chair of the United Way campaign. "It is very rewarding to witness the high level of caring that exists in this community, and we are very grateful to our volunteers and donors for their exceptional contribution to our community," he said.

"There's a lot of need in the community," said King. "Poverty is real, hunger is real, not having housing is real, right here in Cleveland. And while United Way can't eradicate poverty on its own, it provides very important services that address those issues and more."

Among the largest workplace campaigns in 2006, four raised over $1 million: KeyCorp ($3.5 million); National City ($3 million); Eaton Corporation ($1.35 million) and The Cleveland Clinic ($1.1 million).

The annual meeting was also a time to recognize volunteers who had contributed their time and talents to United Way throughout the year. Lois Goodman, Senior Success Vision Council Co-Chair, past United Way Board Member and Work and Family Consulting Group President, was named Volunteer of the Year for her long and dedicated service to the community through United Way. And Dennis Lafferty, United Way 2006 Campaign Liaison, Nominating Committee Member and Jones Day Executive Assistant to the Managing Partner, was named Community Partner.

Bob Gillespie, Community Vision Council Co-Chair and KeyCorp Chairman Emeritus, reported on the Community Vision Council activities. He recognized the Adoption Network and the Department of Children and Family Services for placing 338 youngsters in adoptive homes as part of the Strong Families = Successful Children initiative.

The meeting ended with the introduction of the 2007 Campaign Co-Chairs Paul Clark, National City Bank President, Northern Ohio region; and Philip L. Rice, National City Bank President and CEO. Clark and Rice gave an overview of the 2007 campaign.

Prior to the annual meeting, the Board of Directors met to introduce the following new board members: Donald J. Dailey, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Office Managing Partner; Steven A. Eisenbrown, Rockwell Automation Senior Vice President; Edward O. Handy, Charter One Bank, Ohio President and Chief Executive Officer; Reverend Robin Hedgeman, Bethany Christian Church Senior Pastor; Evan Koppel, Continental Airlines Regional Sales Director; Brooke Spectorsky, WKYC-TV 3 President and General Manager; and Elizabeth Wing, Cleveland.com President.
