United Way Announces 2007 Campaign Goal is $42.3 Million
September 7, 2007 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Gateway Plaza became "Pancake Plaza" for a day as United Way of Greater Cleveland kicked off its 2007 campaign in a new location on Friday, September 7, from 7 to 10 a.m., between Quicken Loans Arena and Jacobs Field.
Local celebrities, business leaders and other volunteers flipped flapjacks and prepared delicious breakfasts in a show of support to our community through United Way. At 8 a.m., United Way 2007 Campaign Co-Chairs Philip L. Rice, National City Bank President and CEO; and Paul Clark, National City Bank President, Northern Ohio Region, announced the 2007 United Way Campaign goal of $42.3 million.
Rice thanked all United Way donors and volunteers for their participation in past campaigns, and asked for their support in the 2007 Campaign. "You are making our community better through your generosity to United Way," he said.
"Supporting the campaign is one of the best ways that, together, we can ensure our community remains healthy and thriving," said Clark. "Because of the generosity of United Way donors, nearly 180 health and human service programs provided by more than 130 partner agencies are available in our community."
Henry L. Meyer III, United Way Chairman of the Board and KeyCorp Chairman and CEO, introduced Campaign Co-Chairs Rice and Clark and thanked them for their leadership and dedication to United Way.
Throughout the morning, local celebrities and business leaders flipped pancakes on large outdoor grills to provide the breakfasts for $5 served under a huge tent on Gateway Plaza. Also, pancake deliveries were available to downtown offices and curbside pickup service was available. UPS again graciously donated the services of its drivers to deliver pancake breakfasts in support of United Way. More than 2,000 breakfasts were served.
The Cavaliers Scream Team provided a high-energy dance routine leading up to the goal announcement. WTAM 1100's Wills and Snyder morning radio show broadcasted live from the event. The WDOK/ Fifth Third Bank Mega Money Machine was there and the Cleveland Indians' and Browns' mascots paid a visit.
K. Michael Benz, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Cleveland, thanked sponsors and friends who made the event possible, including Northern Haserot, National City Bank, Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, Foote Printing, cleveland.com, UPS, Verizon Wireless, WDOK, Fifth Third Bank and all the United Way volunteers and staff members who participated.
