Browns Create Youth Fitness Facility for City Neighborhood Center
October 1, 2007 (Cleveland, Ohio)
United Way of Greater Cleveland will team up with the Cleveland Browns Foundation and National City to create a youth Fitness Zone for preteens and teens in the Goodrich-Gannett Neighborhood Center at 1368 East 55th Street in Cleveland for the 9th Annual Hometown Huddle on Tuesday, October 9, 2007. This first-of-its-kind project specifically and positively addresses the problem of declining physical fitness and obesity affecting America's youth in conjunction with the NFL "Play 60" Platform, which encourages kids to get 60 minutes of activity a day.
The Cleveland Browns Foundation and National City are sponsoring this brand-new fitness activity zone, complete with a multistation workout machine, rock climbing wall, punching bags, fitness stations, pull-up bars, new flooring, wall murals, floor mats and a game area. Volunteers from National City, United Way and the Cleveland Browns, including Browns players, trainers and other staff, will provide the labor to build it in one day. In addition, outdoor landscaping work will be performed on the facility grounds. The work will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until finished, ending at about 4 p.m. When assembly of the exercise machines is completed in the afternoon, Cleveland Browns players will demonstrate the equipment to neighborhood youths in the new Fitness Zone.
"We're proud to support this exciting initiative," said Phil Rice, President and CEO, National City Bank. "Though our daily focus at National City is on the fiscal health of our community, the physical fitness of our community - especially our youth - is no less important. This Fitness Zone directly addresses that concern in a fun and interactive way, and we're honored to be a part of such an important project."
Goodrich-Gannet Neighborhood Center is a United Way partner agency and provides youth programs that focus on developing neighborhood preteens and teens' self-esteem, physical fitness and sense of citizenship through social, recreational and educational activities.
