United Way Exceeds Goal, Raises Over $43 Million
March 7, 2008 (Cleveland, Ohio)
The 2007 United Way of Greater Cleveland Campaign surpassed its goal, raising $43,009,809 announced Campaign Co-Chairs Philip L. Rice, President and CEO of National City Bank, and Paul Clark, President of Northern Ohio Banking, National City Bank, at United Way's Annual Meeting March 7 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. The largest number of attendees ever, more than 1,200 people attended the meeting to celebrate the United Way campaign on behalf of the community.
"Today is time of great celebration," said Henry L. Meyer III, United Way of Greater Cleveland Board Chairman and KeyCorp Chairman and CEO, during his report to the community. "I would like to thank Phil Rice and Paul Clark, and commend them on running an outstanding campaign." Meyer gave thanks to the United Way campaign cabinet of more than 200 volunteers for its diligent efforts on behalf of the campaign. Meyer also announced that he was finishing his term as United Way Board Chairman and introduced his successor, Sandra Pianalto, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Pianalto will serve as United Way of Greater Cleveland Board Chairwoman from 2008 to 2010.
"What a year we have had," said Rice, reflecting on the United Way campaign. "Since we addressed this audience one year ago, Paul Clark and I have experienced both the energy and generosity of this community…United Way will be able to continue to make a difference in our community every day…and this is only possible because of all of you and the thousands of United Way volunteers and donors that you represent."
"It has been an interesting, invigorating, rewarding and humbling year for Paul and me," said Clark. "So many gave so much time, energy, talent and dollars to make this a successful campaign."
Among the largest workplace campaigns in 2007, four raised over $1 million: KeyCorp ($3.5 million), National City ($3.2 million), Cleveland Clinic Health System ($1.75 million) and Eaton Corporation ($1.5 million).
The annual meeting was also a time to recognize volunteers who had contributed their time and talents to United Way throughout the year. Robert J. King, Jr., United Way Board Member, 2006 Campaign Co-Chair and Financial Stocks, Inc. CEO, was named Volunteer of the Year for his tireless service to the community through United Way. In addition, Joanne Clark, United Way 2007 Campaign Liaison and National City Corporation Corporate Public Affairs Senior Vice President, and Karen R. Haefling, United Way Volunteer and KeyCorp Chief Marketing Officer, were individually recognized with Community Partner awards.
Charles A. Ratner, Community Vision Council Co-Chair and Forest City Enterprises, Inc. President and CEO, reported on Community Vision Council activities. He spoke on the progress of several developing initiatives, including the Comprehensive Clinical Data Sharing Network, Promoting Family Behavioral Health in the Prison Re-Entry Population and Benefits Enrollment and Access.
The meeting concluded with the introduction of the 2008 Campaign Co-Chairs, Marc S. Byrnes, Oswald Companies Chairman and CEO, and Christopher M. Connor, The Sherwin-Williams Company Chairman and CEO. Byrnes and Connor gave an overview of the 2008 campaign, with Connor delivering his remarks via video because he was out of town with a prior business commitment.
